Choosing a rug – what should you pay attention to?
When choosing a rug, there are a number of points to pay attention to:
- Format
- Shape
- Material
- Style
- Function
Tip: Before purchasing a rug, you can mark the suggested dimensions on the floor with painter's tape. This will give you a visual idea of what the rug will look like in the room. Don't have painter's tape? No problem! You can also lay down newspapers to determine the size.
Carpet in the living room
The most common place to place rugs is the living room. In a living room or sitting area that is large, a common rule of thumb is to place the front legs of the sofa on the rug. In this way, the rug connects all the furniture. This creates peace, atmosphere and unity in the living room.
There are many sizes of rugs available. But how big should a rug under a sofa actually be? Measure the sofa in advance and add about 30-40 centimeters, so that the rug protrudes the rug by 15-20 cm on both sides of the sofa. You also place the rug about 15-20 cm under the sofa, with the front legs on the rug. For a two-seater sofa, rugs measuring 200x140 or 230x160 centimeters are usually good options. Do you have a three-seater sofa? Then the sizes 240x170 and 300 x 200 centimeters are often sufficient.
In a smaller room you can choose not to place the legs on the rug and leave 20 centimeters between the sofa and the rug. This makes the whole thing look spacious and less crammed. A rug that is too large makes a room seem smaller and will be too dominant.
It is therefore important that you always look at the size of the sofa and then look for a rug that is slightly larger than the sofa. Never choose a rug that is smaller than the sofa.
Correct size rug for a corner sofa
What size rug for a corner sofa?
Do you have a corner sofa with low or no sofa legs? The rug can then be pushed between 5-20 cm under the sofa. For a corner sofa with higher legs, we recommend placing the rug between 20-30 cm under the sofa.
To determine the correct size rug for a corner sofa, look at the dimensions from the inside of the corner to the armrest. It is best if the rug protrudes a bit on the side you are looking at from the corner.
What size round rug for a corner sofa?
A round rug gives an unexpectedly nice twist to your interior. Most houses have straight walls and straight furniture. To break up these straight lines, you can place a round rug. Additional advantages are that it makes the space look playful and large.
Do you choose a round rug for the corner sofa? Then make sure that the curves of the rug extend a bit under the sofa. Also place the rug on the side of the corner.
Rug under your dining table
For the dining room it is advisable to choose a rug that fits both the dining table and the chairs. Make sure that the rug extends at least 70 centimeters around the dining table, so that the chair legs do not rest on the edges of the rug when moving.
Carpet in the bedroom
Rugs are also an increasingly important part of the bedroom these days. Stepping out of bed onto a nice soft carpet, how nice is that.
Do you want to put a rug under your bed? Make sure that the rug is large and protrudes on both sides, otherwise the rug will disappear under the bed. You can also place the rug so that it is one-third under the bed, creating an optical extension of your bed. You can also place a small (round) rug next to your bed or at the foot of the bed.
Different materials
Cotton, coconut, sisal and wool rugs are all made from natural materials. You also have synthetic rugs made of plastic and polyester. The function and style determine the choice of material.
A wool rug is the most popular. This material is easy to maintain, because wool fibers do not attract dirt. This keeps the rug beautiful and fresh in color for a long time. A disadvantage of a wool rug is that it can fluff quite a bit.
Don't like wool or can't stand it? Then a cotton rug is a good alternative. A cotton rug is a child-friendly option and is often chosen for the nursery. You can easily wash this material and it is available for a good price. This also makes it easy to replace it with a new one when you're done using it.
A plastic rug is ideal for people with dust allergies. These rugs do not absorb dust, making them easy to clean. An additional advantage is that you can also place a plastic rug outside, which looks great under the picnic table.
Choosing a rug – the right balance between appearance and functionality
There are a number of rules of thumb for choosing the right size rug for your interior. But ultimately it mainly depends on the characteristics of the room and your own preferences. Experiment and adjust until you find a balance that works for the look and functionality of the space.
